What Is Leaky Gut?
Leaky gut is hyper-permeability of the intestinal lining! The intestinal lining is one of the most important barriers in the body. Its job is to allow nutrients to pass into the bloodstream while keeping harmful substances out. When this barrier becomes compromised, it becomes a condition commonly referred to as leaky gut (which is not an official medical term, but commonly used) or intestinal hyper-permeability (the correct term). Particles that should remain inside the digestive tract can enter circulation.
These particles may include:
Undigested food proteins
Bacterial fragments
Toxins
Inflammatory compounds
Once these substances cross into the bloodstream, the immune system reacts. Over time, repeated immune activation can lead to chronic inflammation and, in some cases, autoimmune disease.
At Inner Balance Functional Medicine, we frequently see gut barrier dysfunction playing a role in autoimmune patterns affecting our patients.
Can leaky gut cause autoimmune disease?
Leaky gut may contribute to autoimmune disease by allowing immune-triggering particles into the bloodstream, increasing inflammation and immune reactivity in genetically susceptible individuals.
Why the Gut Is Central to Immune Health
The gut is home to a large portion of the immune system. This means that immune activity is constantly influenced by what happens in the digestive tract.
When the gut barrier is functioning well:
Immune exposure is controlled
Inflammation remains regulated
Nutrient absorption is efficient
When the gut barrier is compromised:
Immune activation increases
Inflammation rises
Sensitivity to foods and environments may increase
This can create a cycle where the immune system becomes increasingly reactive.
The Link Between Leaky Gut and Autoimmune Conditions
Leaky gut has been associated with several autoimmune conditions, including:
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Lupus
Psoriasis
Inflammatory bowel conditions
This does not mean leaky gut is the only cause, but it is often a major contributing factor.
The connection lies in immune confusion. When the immune system is repeatedly exposed to foreign particles entering the bloodstream, it may begin reacting more aggressively. In some cases, this reactivity may extend to the body’s own tissues.
What Causes Leaky Gut?
Several factors can disrupt the integrity of the gut lining:
Chronic stress
Poor diet (processed foods, sugar, alcohol)
Food sensitivities
Antibiotics or medications
Infections
Microbiome imbalance
Chronic inflammation
Each of these factors weakens the tight junctions between intestinal cells.
If you have autoimmune symptoms along with digestive issues, this connection is worth exploring.
If your symptoms seem to involve multiple systems—digestive, hormonal, immune—it may not be random. The gut often sits at the center of that pattern.
Symptoms That May Suggest Leaky Gut
Bloating or gas
Food sensitivities
Brain fog
Fatigue
Joint discomfort
Skin issues
Autoimmune flare patterns
Many patients are surprised to learn that symptoms outside the digestive system can still originate in the gut.
The Gut-Inflammation Cycle
Once the gut barrier is compromised, inflammation can increase throughout the body. This inflammation can then further damage the gut lining, creating a feedback loop.
Breaking this cycle requires addressing both:
The triggers damaging the gut
The repair of the gut lining itself
Functional Medicine Approach
At Inner Balance Functional Medicine, we take a structured approach to gut repair as part of autoimmune support.
This often includes:
Removing inflammatory triggers
Supporting microbiome balance
Repairing the gut lining
Improving digestion and absorption
Reducing systemic inflammation
This approach is personalized based on symptoms, history, and testing when appropriate.
