Why You’re Always Tired
Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms people experience, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. Many patients are told to “get more sleep” or “reduce stress,” but those recommendations often fail to address the underlying cause.
At Inner Balance Functional Medicine, we view fatigue as a signal, not a diagnosis. The body is communicating that something is out of balance. The goal is not to mask fatigue, but to understand why it is happening.
Fatigue rarely comes from a single issue. It is usually the result of multiple overlapping factors.
What causes chronic fatigue?
Chronic fatigue can be caused by hormone imbalance, gut dysfunction, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar instability, poor sleep, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
Common Root Causes of Fatigue
Hormone Imbalance
Hormones play a major role in energy production. Cortisol, thyroid hormones, and sex hormones all influence how the body generates and uses energy.
Imbalances may lead to:
Low energy
Brain fog
Poor recovery
Mood changes
Gut Dysfunction
The gut affects nutrient absorption and inflammation. Poor digestion can reduce the body’s ability to access the nutrients needed for energy production.
Chronic Inflammation
Inflammation requires energy. When the body is inflamed, more resources are directed toward immune activity, leaving less available for daily function.
Nutrient Deficiencies
Nutrients such as B vitamins, magnesium, iron, and others are essential for energy production.
Low levels can lead to:
Fatigue
Weakness
Poor concentration
Blood Sugar Imbalance
Fluctuating blood sugar can cause energy highs and crashes throughout the day.
Common signs include:
Afternoon crashes
Cravings
Irritability
Brain fog
Poor Sleep Quality
Even if you’re getting enough hours of sleep, poor sleep quality can affect recovery and energy levels.
Mitochondrial Dysfunction
Energy is produced at the cellular level. When mitochondria are not functioning efficiently, fatigue can persist even with rest.
If your fatigue feels constant or unexplained, there is likely more than one factor involved.
The Energy Production System
Energy production is not controlled by a single system—it involves:
Hormones
Nutrients
Mitochondria
Blood sugar
Nervous system balance
When one or more of these systems is out of balance, fatigue can develop.
Why Quick Fixes Don’t Work
Many people try to manage fatigue with:
Caffeine
Sugar
Energy supplements
While these may provide short-term relief, they do not address the root cause and may worsen the underlying imbalance over time.
Functional Medicine Approach
At Inner Balance Functional Medicine, we focus on identifying and addressing the root causes of fatigue.
This may include:
Reviewing symptoms and patterns
Evaluating lifestyle factors
Supporting nutrition
Stabilizing blood sugar
Improving sleep
Reducing inflammation
Supporting hormone balance
The goal is to restore sustainable energy rather than temporary stimulation.
Why This Matters
Fatigue is often normalized, but it should not be ignored. When energy is low, it affects every aspect of life—from productivity to mood to overall health.
Addressing fatigue at its root can improve:
Energy levels
Mental clarity
Hormone balance
Long-term health
