Migraines and Infertility

Updated: Jan 21, 2023

Besides having an acupuncture specialty treating migraines, a large part of my practice is focused on treating women’s health. What amazes me, or at least used to amaze me, is how many patients come in struggling with infertility and also suffer from migraine headaches. The reason I say it used to amaze me is I always thought I was dealing with two separate issues. In 90% of these cases, they’re linked to each other.

When you look to treat migraine pain, you need to figure out the source of the problem. The brain itself doesn’t actually feel pain. So what can it be? Well, the most likely possibilities are: a cervical bone out of place, tight muscles in the neck, restricted blood flow, sinus pressure or hormone imbalance.

When a female patient comes in with migraines and infertility, my first thought is always hormone imbalance. It doesn’t always work out that way, but a majority of the time it is a problem with hormones. I’ve had so many patients with these conditions come in for treatments and the same things happen. First the migraines disappear, then their cycle becomes regular and then they tell me they’re pregnant!!! Treating fertility patients can be especially rewarding. There’s always an objective when a patient's treatment starts and there’s no greater way of hearing you’ve reached that objective than when the patient says “I’M PREGNANT!!!”

Acupuncture is a great balancer in the body. I think it helps to balance the mind and the body. It can function as a modality extremely effectively all on its own. Chinese herbs are great to tonify or sedate the body, organ systems or certain parts of the body. Herbs are also extremely effective all by themselves. Whether used separately or used together, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can be the tipping point in helping fertility patients become pregnant and be migraine free.
