What are migraines?

Migraines are a neurological condition that causes a throbbing sensation in one area of the head. The pain from a migraine may last a few hours or a few days. In addition to the head pain, migraines also cause other symptoms such as sensitivity to light and nausea.

Migraines are a common type of headache, affecting up to 12% of adults in the United States.

What are the symptoms of migraines?

Migraine symptoms vary in type and severity and may occur in stages. However, not everyone with migraines goes through each migraine stage.

Migraine stages and symptoms include:

Prodrome

Before onset of your migraine, you may go through the prodrome stage. During this stage, you may have difficulty concentrating, feel irritable, and experience food cravings.

Aura

Aura refers to the sensory changes you may experience before or during your migraine headache. Aura symptoms include seeing bright flashes of light, tingling skin, or ringing in your ears (tinnitus).

Headache

During your migraine headache, you feel a pulsing or throbbing sensation on one side of your head. You may also feel tired and dizzy, nauseous, and have sensitivity to bright lights.

Postdrome

When your headache ends, you may go through the postdrome stage. During this stage, you may have a hard time concentrating, feel tired and depressed, or experience feelings of euphoria.

What can I expect during a migraine consultation?

You can expect a comprehensive exam when you visit Inner Balance Acupuncture for a migraine consultation. The acupuncture practice specializes in treating migraines.

Taking a holistic approach to care, your provider at Inner Balance Acupuncture asks detailed questions about your migraines and how they affect your daily life. They listen intently to your concerns and develop a plan to reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of your migraines.

What treatments can help my migraines?

Inner Balance Acupuncture uses acupuncture, herbs, and injection therapy to treat migraines. Acupuncture is an ancient healing technique that uses thin needles to promote blood flow.

During acupuncture treatment for migraines, your acupuncturist places needles at specific pressure points around your head, neck, arms, and legs. The practitioner leaves them in place for a certain amount of time, depending on the patient's condition.

At Inner Balance Acupuncture, it isn’t just about making the migraine go away, but to stop the migraines from developing at all. As the best time to treat migraines is when you don’t have one, Inner Balance will usually recommend a treatment plan to gain the most benefits. They may also suggest pharmaceutical-grade nutritional supplements and nutrition therapy to help manage migraines at home.

For a natural approach to migraine headaches, call Inner Balance Acupuncture or schedule an appointment online today.
